Focus Scripture: Hebrews 9:23–28 (NKJV)
It was necessary that the copies of the things in the heavens should be purified with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us; not that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another—He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.
Introduction
So Christ offered Himself once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him, He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation. The result of Jesus’ once-and-for-all—Jesus sacrifice, offered on Calvary’s cross—paid for the sin of the world, according to John 1:29, and opened the door to all.
Once and for All: Salvation Opened to All
John 3:16, one of the famous verses in the Bible, says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Jesus Himself was the sacrifice of the propitiation for our sin, and not for our sins only, but also for the whole world – 1 John 2:2. God’s wrath against sin was once and for all satisfied for all who would believe in His Son.
Shifted from Darkness to Marvelous Light
Christ’s once-and-for-all sacrifice for humanity would also once-and-for-all shift all those who would accept Him as their Lord and Savior. He would shift us from the kingdom of darkness into His marvelous light. And according to 1 Peter 2:9, this is one of the results of Jesus’ once-and-for-all sacrifice-a gift of salvation, deliverance from the consequences of sin.
A Chosen Generation and Peace with God
Once Jesus paid that price for us, we know our once-and-for-all shifted to be called a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people. All true followers of Jesus Christ, as once-and-for-all, have peace with God and the peace of God—Romans 5:1.
Sons and Daughters through Adoption
We have once-and-for-all shifted, and Christ’s once-and-for-all price that He paid for us shifted us from being enemies of God to be His sons and daughters throughout the ages. According to Romans 8:15, we have received the Spirit of adoption, because John 1:12 says—“But as many as received Him, He gave them the right to be called the children of God.” And this right gives us the privilege of being sons and daughters in God’s family.
So one of the results of Jesus’ once-and-for-all sarifice is that we are now sons and daughters. We can come to cast all of our cares upon Him because He cares about us.
I was reading something, and it said, “The Son of God became the Son of Man, and the children of men became the children of God.” So one of the results of Jesus’ sacrifice—His once-and-for-all price, dying on Calvary for us—is that we are now called children of God. We have once-and-for-all been shifted from being guilty to being justified before God. That is Romans 5:18.
Righteousness and New Creation in Christ
We are once-and-for-all the righteousness of God in Him because of the sacrifice that Jesus paid for us, and that’s 2 Corinthians 5:21. We are once-and-for-all a new creation in Christ, according to 2 Corinthians 5:17.
2 Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
So we can see there is so much we have received because of Jesus’ sacrifice—His once-and-for-all sacrifice He has paid.
From Sinners to Saints and Recipients of Mercy
We have been once-and-for-all being called—we are once-and-for-all being shifted—from being sinners to being saints of God—Romans 1:7. According to an article I read, it says, “The only difference between a sinner and a saint is the Savior and the gift of salvation and righteousness.”
You and I are saints not because of our perfection, but because of our position in Christ. We are now members—we are now part of the body of Christ—through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, correct? We have once-and-for-all been shifted to being recipients of God’s grace and mercy.
This is God’s unmerited favor, and the Word of God in Lamentations talks about how His mercies are new every morning. Great is His faithfulness. And Hebrews 4:16 says, “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
Sanctification and the Ultimate Once-and-for-All
All believers are recipients of what Christ did on Calvary for us. We are in the process of sanctification, where we are becoming more like Christ every day, and through the work of the Holy Spirit, He will help us love the Lord with all of our heart, with all of our mind, with all of our soul, and with all of our strength. So, as you can see, what Christ did for us—even according to the text—is appointed for men to die once, and after this, judgment.
One day we will—one day in the future—we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet—1 Corinthians 15:51. This will be the ultimate once-and-for-all, where we will be—one day—reigning, and we will be in the presence of God for all eternity.
No More Sacrifices and Access to the Throne of Grace
So I just want to encourage you and encourage myself that that price that Christ paid, that once-and-for-all—we don’t have to slay any lamb anymore. We don’t have to sprinkle any blood on the door. I don’t have to come with pigeons. I don’t have to come with goats or anything. Jesus paid it all, and the Word of God says He ever lives to make intercession – He’s seated at the right hand of God, making intercession.
That’s why you and I are here this morning. And even like the song said, “Through the blood”—because of His shed blood on Calvary—we have access to the throne of grace.
We are not clothed in any righteousness of our own, but we are clothed in Christ’s righteousness. We are sons, we are daughters, we have been gifted. There is so much that Jesus did for us, and I only just touched the surface.
Benefits and Identity in Christ
I only just touched the surface, but I want to just encourage you: because of Jesus’ once-and-for-all, we are the recipients. And Pastor Bev talked about the benefits of this strength. These are some benefits of what Jesus did for us on Calvary. We are justified.
We are not guilty. We have an accuser who was pointing out our faults, our flaws—how you did this and that—but no, because of the blood of Jesus, we are justified because of what He did on Calvary. We are sons and daughters.
Our names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. We are called to be ambassadors of Christ. We are saints. We are saved because of what Jesus did on Calvary.
We are a new creation. We are being transformed by the renewing of our minds daily. We have peace with God.
We are no enemies; we are friends. We have the privileges of presenting the gospel of Jesus to exalt Jesus. We have the privilege of equipping the people of God and expanding the kingdom of God. So just be encouraged this morning. Know that what Christ did for us on Calvary is marvelous.
We can’t thank Him enough for what He did for us on Calvary. We have to thank Him every day—give God thanks. There’s so much going on in our lives and in the world, but there’s so much to give God thanks for what Jesus did for us once-and-for-all.
You know one day He’s coming back—like Pastor Rod says—coming back for His bride. We, the church, He’s coming back for a bride without spot and wrinkles.
So let us endeavor to finish this race that has been set before us with the help of the Holy Spirit, because what Christ did for us is so precious. We have so much to give God thanks for. We have so much. So let us not become weary in well doing.
Let us keep our eyes fixed on the prize. You know, that is, you know, the prize that is set before us, that one day—like Pastor Rod said on Sunday—we will hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” So be encouraged. The result of Christ’s once-and-for-all for us is just marvelous in our eyes.
Prayer
So Father God, we thank You.
We thank You for what Jesus did for us. We have access to You. We can call on You 24/7, 365, 366. God, we can cast all of our cares.
You are our burden-bearer. You are the strength of our life. Oh God, we can just call upon You anytime, and You said You would answer us and show us great and mighty things that we know not of.
And all of this is possible because of what Jesus did for us on Calvary, God. He was humiliated. He was rejected. He was abandoned, all because of me, all because of us, oh God.
But because of the price He paid, we have access to You, God. We are Your sons, we are Your daughters. You have put Your Spirit in us, oh God. We are the head and not the tail. We are above and not beneath, oh God.
Oh God, You would help us. You would strengthen us. You would give us—we have everything that we need, God.
So help us this morning to recognize, to realize the benefits, and see the result of all that Jesus did for us on Calvary, and we will walk upright, God, in Your sight.
So we thank You. Thank You for hearing our cries this morning. Thank You for moving on our behalf.
In Jesus’ name, I pray with thanksgiving.
Amen, amen, amen.
