Focus Scripture — Luke 22:19
And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.
Introduction
So we’re looking at the cross, because the cross gets us ready for this shift. This shift that we’ve been looking for, talking about, and seeking during these last 21 days. The word READY has five letters that we want to look at today.
R — Remember
The first letter is R: Remember.
We’re stopping to remember Calvary. Remember what He did. The Bible tells us in Luke 22:19 to do this in remembrance of Him.
We are at an intersection. We’ve come through the 21 days. We are shifting. We are getting ready. So much is happening, but it cannot happen unless we are obedient and yielded to the cross. Stop and remember. Stop and think. Stop and say, “Thank You, Jesus, for what You did for me on Calvary.” Remember what He did. Go through the scriptures again and read them. Remember the sacrifices He made: the crown of thorns on His head, the nails in His hands, the spear in His side. He suffered. Let’s remember that. We’re not talking about the resurrection right now, because we know how the story ends. But before we get to the end of the story, we have to remember what happened at the cross. And we also have to remember that He sustained us through the 21 days. Going through those days wasn’t easy for everyone. It wasn’t easy for me. But He sustained us.
You cannot shift into what God has next if you forget what God has already brought you through. You cannot shift if you forget what God has done. So that’s R: Remember.
E — Examine
The next letter is E: Examine.
Take a good look. Look at yourself. First Corinthians 11:28 tells us to examine ourselves. When you’re fasting, it naturally leads you to examine yourself. Prayer and fasting strip us of distractions. Some of us stepped away from things we do every day. It strips us so we can stop, reflect, and think about the cross.
Communion invites us to honestly reflect. Examining yourself is not condemnation. It is alignment. It’s not condemnation, it’s alignment. Before God shifts our circumstances, He shifts our hearts. Your heart needs to be shifted before your circumstances can change.
A — Align
The next letter is A: Align.
Yesterday we ended the fast with thankfulness. Thankfulness is where alignment lives, because gratitude realigns our perspective. When you stop to say thank you, it makes you think about what Jesus did for you on Calvary.
Communion today realigns us with the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross. I think it’s beautiful that this is how our 21 days end—right here at Calvary, right here at the cross. Fasting realigns our dependence on the cross and on Calvary. So we say, “God, I’m not just thankful for what You’re going to do. I’m grateful for what You’ve already done.”
D — Declare
The next letter is D: Declare.
Communion is not silent. First Corinthians 11:26 tells us that as often as we eat this bread, we declare the Lord’s death.
When we take communion, we are declaring His death. We are declaring His victory over death. We are declaring His provision for us. We are declaring that the work of the cross still works and still lives in us today. So we don’t enter this shift quietly. We declare what God did for us during these 21 days, and we declare what Jesus has already done.
Y — Yield
And the last letter is Y: Yield.
This is where READY meets shift. At this intersection—fasting, laying aside, sacrifice, communion—we yield and surrender and say, “Yes, God.”
Fasting teaches us to surrender. Communion seals that surrender. And yielding says, “God, I’m available for what is coming next.”
Yielding is the doorway to the shift.
Final Exhortation
So we don’t enter this shift quietly. We declare what God did for us during these 21 days, and we declare what Jesus has already done.
This is where READY meets shift. At this intersection—fasting, laying aside, sacrifice, communion—we yield and surrender and say, “Yes, God.”
Prayer
Father, thank You for this time together. I pray that as we get ready for this shift, You prepare our hearts. We know You’re going to do things in our lives that we were not anticipating or expecting.
But at this intersection, where the cross meets us, we stop and remember what You did for us on Calvary. Our hearts are now prepared and ready to move into what You have prepared for us.
We’re looking for this shift in the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God, as we surrender and as we yield.
Amen.
