Course Marshals

Speaker: Minister Barrett | Series: Stay The Course

Scripture Focus: 1 Corinthians 9:24–25 (KJV)

Scripture Focus

“Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.” — 1 Corinthians 9:24–25 (KJV)

The Christian life is not a casual stroll; it is a marked course with a finish worth running for. Scripture calls us to focused effort, steady discipline, and holy endurance — so we can finish well and receive the incorruptible crown.

Course Marshals — A Picture for the Christian Race

In road races, course marshals stand at key points to protect runners, point out turns, hold back traffic, and cheer when the hill tries to take your breath. Spiritually, God positions “course marshals” in our journey so we don’t drift, stall, or lose momentum. We are not running aimlessly — the route is marked, and help is placed along the way.

“Let us run with patience the race that is set before us.” — Hebrews 12:1 (KJV)

So when the path gets crowded or confusing, don’t panic — look for God’s signals, listen for His direction, and keep your cadence.

The Word of God — Our Ultimate Course Marshal

Runners who heed instructions stay on course; believers who follow Scripture stay in the will of God. His Word doesn’t only inspire — it aligns, corrects, and illuminates the route.

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” — Psalm 119:105 (KJV)

“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” — Psalm 119:11 (KJV)

“Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.” — Psalm 119:133 (KJV)

To follow the Word is to follow Jesus — the Word made flesh — and He leads us “in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.”

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” — John 1:1 (KJV)

The Holy Spirit — Our Present Guide on the Course

Course marshals don’t just wave you forward — they also block lanes you must not enter. The Holy Spirit does this within us, closing wrong turns and opening God’s timing. Sometimes a plan is “good,” but not God’s season; listening spares delay and sets up divine opportunities.

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth… and he will shew you things to come.” — John 16:13 (KJV)

“…they were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia… they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.” — Acts 16:6–7 (KJV)

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you… and ye are not your own?” — 1 Corinthians 6:19 (KJV)

“And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it…” — Isaiah 30:21 (KJV)

Stay sensitive — He will show you when to press, when to pivot, and when to wait so you keep the right pace at the right time.

Hindrances on the Route — “Who Hindered You?”

In Central Park races, the path is shared — cyclists, strollers, dogs, crowds. One sudden stop can break your rhythm and drain momentum. Spiritually, distractions and temptations do the same; they cut the flow and make the hill feel steeper. If you stumble, don’t stay down — reset your focus and rejoin the pace.

“Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?” — Galatians 5:7 (KJV)

“…the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life…” — 1 John 2:16 (KJV)

Keep your eyes on the prize and your feet moving in obedience. Don’t fall back — don’t lose momentum — don’t give up. Gather yourself in grace and keep running.

Adversity — God’s Tool to Keep Us on Course

Sometimes the thing that slows you actually saves you. Affliction can become a spiritual checkpoint — a forced slowdown that resets our dependency and deepens our trust. Pruning is painful, but purposeful; God’s faithful hand refines us so we can run lighter and straighter.

“It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.” — Psalm 119:71 (KJV)

“Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word.” — Psalm 119:67 (KJV)

“Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.” — Job 2:10 (KJV)

“Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.” — John 15:2 (KJV)

“I know, O LORD, that thy judgments are right, and that thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me.” — Psalm 119:75 (KJV)

See adversity with new eyes — not as a detour that defeats you, but as a tool that develops you.

We Run Better Together — Encouragement from the Body

There are miles you would not finish without the sound of another runner near you. In Christ, we are placed in a body so no one runs alone. Your presence in prayer, worship, and service strengthens someone else’s stride; your testimony fuels another’s faith.

“And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together…” — Hebrews 10:24–25 (KJV)

“Two are better than one… for if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow.” — Ecclesiastes 4:9–10 (KJV)

“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.” — Proverbs 27:17 (KJV)

“…that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.” — 2 Corinthians 1:4 (KJV)

Be someone’s “You’ve got this!” today — and let others be that for you. We finish stronger when we finish together.

Stay Armored — And Finish Your Race

God supplies everything needed for a faithful finish: truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, the Word, and prayer. Gear up, set your pace, and keep your eyes on the crown that does not fade.

“Put on the whole armour of God…” — Ephesians 6:11–18 (KJV)

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” — 2 Timothy 4:7 (KJV)

Stay the course. Follow the course marshals — the Word, the Spirit, and the fellowship of the saints — and you will finish well.

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for lighting our path with Your Word, for guiding us by Your Spirit, and for surrounding us with believers who strengthen our stride. Keep us on course, deliver us from hindrances, and help us run with patience the race set before us. We choose to obey, to endure, and to finish with joy — for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
